POW! Thanet lunch raises cash for East Kent Mencap

Ramsgate restaurant owner Raushan Ara, whose teenage son has a learning disability and uses East Kent Mencap’s services, recently held a lunch to raise funds for the charity’s children and youth department.

The event was organised in partnership with Power of Women, and took place on International Women’s Day at Raushan’s restaurant, the Ramsgate Tandoori. The lunch was supported by members of the local community, who brought national dishes to share, and  raised £500.

Members of East Kent Mencap’s women’s group also spoke at the event. This provides a safe place for women with a learning disability to talk about the things that are important to them. At the event, the group talked about how they are working with Oasis to produce an easy read leaflet about domestic violence.

Raushan said: I organise this lunch every year for International Women’s Day. Since my son started using East Kent Mencap’s services, I’ve wanted to support them in some way and this year’s event seemed a good way to celebrate being a mother and help other parents. Many thanks to everyone who came along on the day and very generously donated raffle prizes.”
