POW!Thanet launches on Wednesday (March 8) with an eclectic melange of events across Broadstairs, Cliftonville, Margate and Ramsgate.
Ramsgate Tandoori kicks off the festival, hosting a pot-luck global lunch. Proceeds will go to Mencap, and guests are invited to bring a dish from their own cultural background – anything from pizza to paella.
In Broadstairs, New Kent Gallery will play host to POW! A Celebration of Women Artists, while in Cliftonville several galleries throw open their doors: Man! I Feel Like A Woman opens at Margate Arts Club and Revolutions at the Viking Gallery.
The official launch programme begins at 4pm at Turner Contemporary. b.supreme have been working with local schools and will put on a performance with the young dancers following their eight week education project.
At 4.30pm, Oasis Domestic Abuse Service present ‘Why Doesn’t She Just Leave? and Other Myth Busting Questions’, exploring some of the misconceptions and ideas that people have about domestic abuse.
At 6pm Turner Contemporary’s Victoria Pomeroy hosts the launch reception, a chance to meet some of the team, artists and exhibitors, before heading upstairs to watch a Bonnie & Clyde breakdance battle by b.supreme, or over to the Theatre Royal for an alternative take on ‘Pride & Prejudice’ by Lip Service: ‘Mr Darcy Loses The Plot’.
Founder and Chair, Christina Clark-McQuaid, said: ‘The POW! team has worked with a large number of organisers and artists to produce a really diverse series of events to celebrate International Women’s Day.
“Creativity is thriving in Thanet and over these four days audiences will have an opportunity to explore and enjoy a wide variety of activities.”

Just found this site – been living in Margate, (having moved from Cambridge, where we had lived for 30 years – most of out adult life)!! We thought we loved the place, and my career progressed well there, but since I’ve, (we’ve) lived here, EVERYTHING has changed – in so many ways! I feel like I’m only just beginning to ‘come up for air’, as I seem to be quite a reclusive Artist. This site, however may provide the links I must(?) need, as I am so very bad at mixing. There. That’s the honest truth of things. Fingers crossed. But. We have learned to love Thanet. So glad we came. (Cambridge people thought we were mad’ at the time – as did all the locals)! All good.
