The Colourful World of Pugin: The Grange Open Days

Visit The Grange and St Edward’s Presbytery with the Landmark Trust in historic Ramsgate.

The Grange was built by Augustus Pugin in 1845 and remained in the family until 1928. The building reflects Pugin’s belief in the Gothic style as the only true Christian architecture and his ideal to live out his life in the Middle Ages. Pugin produced some of his finest work at The Grange including designs for the House of Lords.

St Edward’s Presbytery which was built by Augustus Welby Pugin in 1850, part of this great architect’s original conception for this important Gothic revival site on the West Cliffs. The Presbytery has much restrained Pugin detailing to admire, although this simple house was not given the rich interiors of The Grange. It housed priests for only a few years. In the 1860s, Edward Pugin added a well-lit studio overlooking the courtyard of The Grange for his own architectural practice. Pugins lived here until 1928, when the Presbytery became part of the monks’ school.

Admission is free, information on the building’s history and children’s activity sheets will be available on site, along with the knowledgeable staff.

Carry On Camping

“Carry On Camping” is a classic British comedy film released in 1969. It follows the misadventures of a group of campers, including Sid and Bernie, as they head to a rural campsite for a bank holiday weekend. Chaos ensues with mishaps involving their fellow campers, the strict campsite owner, and some unexpected skinny-dipping.

It’s full of classic “Carry On” humour – think innuendo, slapstick, and plenty of awkward situations.

With an interest in the material and formal language of painting and the tactile and intuitive possibilities of process, Susan Absolon harnesses the fluid interaction between word, image, and thought allowing individual works to evolve organically.

Working without a fixed subject, experiences and observations rooted in day-to-day life are synthesized to become a new, unexpected thing.

Susan Absolon’s work has been exhibited in Europe and widely across the UK. She was the recipient of a Juliet Gomperts bursary in 2012, and winner of the Contemporary British Painting Prize in 2021.

Nao Victoria

June 4-14, daily from 10am to 8 pm, Ramsgate Harbour

A replica of The Nao Victoria – associated with the greatest adventure in the history of navigation: the first circumnavigation of the world in the 16th century – is in Ramsgate harbour.

The visit is part of the ship’s new historical awareness tour.

During its stopover, the Nao Victoria will open its decks to visitors of all ages, allowing them to explore the ship’s interior, discover what life was like during the first circumnavigation of the globe, and learn more about the details of the greatest nautical feat ever achieved.

Don’t let these thorny beauties intimidate you; this will be a great opportunity to get acquainted with artichokes and learn how to prepare and enjoy them at their best.

With her gentle and playful approach to cooking, Adriana will guide you through a relaxed afternoon exploring not only seasonality and cooking techniques but also cooking with a disability, favourite songs to listen to while you cook, and more…

The Great Bucket & Spade Run 2026

The Great Bucket & Spade Run will start at Herne Garden Centre, cars leaving between 8am-10am and then follow a country route of about 35 miles, all around the outskirts of Canterbury, arriving at Government Acre Ramsgate around 10am.

An Eat Ethio Gathering

A day-long gathering of coffee ceremonies, shared food, and listening sessions exploring Ethiopian culture through ritual, sound, and collective experience at Margate’s Turner Contemporary

Foyle Rooms

Across three events, artist and curator Helina Tesega invites audiences to spend time together through shared rituals of listening, eating, and conversation. Rooted in Ethiopian traditions and shaped by experiences across Shanghai, Hong Kong, London, and Margate, the programme brings together coffee ceremony, communal dining, and music in the Foyle Rooms.

Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony, 10am – 11am £30

Begin the day with a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony, prepared and served slowly as an act of gathering and welcome. Guests are invited to sit together, take part in the process, and experience coffee as a shared cultural ritual grounded in conversation, care, and hospitality.

Shared Lunch, 1pm – 3pm £65

A communal lunch centred on seasonal British ingredients and coastal herbs, bringing Ethiopian and local influences into conversation through food. Designed as a shared dining experience, the meal creates space for connection, exchange, and slowing down together around the table.

Listening Session, 7pm – 8pm £15

As evening approaches, the space shifts into a listening session featuring Ethiopian jazz, pentatonic scales, and traditional sounds selected by Helina & Scott. Moving from late afternoon into sunset, the music is intended to gently guide the atmosphere of the room, offering a moment for reflection, listening, and collective presence.

Cinema Walk – Ramsgate

Come and explore Ramsgate’s cinema history! Re-visiting the town’s love for the sights, sounds and sensations of film from the 1890s to today

Meeting point: Victoria Pavilion / Weatherspoon

Broadstairs, Margate and Ramsgate may now only have one cinema between them (The Palace Cinema in Broadstairs) but the 3 towns have welcomed places to see film since the dawn of moving pictures.

The Palace’s Cinema Walks explore and celebrate them all, from converted sheds and shops to glorious picture palaces, and from buildings still standing to those of which all flickering traces are long gone. Taking in some local personalities and social history along the way, plus lots of archive images, we’ll re-visit each town’s love for the sights, sounds and sensations of film from the 1890s to today.

Routes – Cinema Walks are in the centre of each town: Broadstairs is smaller and flatter but Ramsgate and Margate include hillier streets. Please contact the Palace in advance to check if the route is suitable for you / your group. Free places are offered to carers accompanying those with a disability.

Health & Safety – By agreeing to participate in a Cinema Walk, all customers are agreeing to listen to safety instructions and exercise due care and attention whilst walking.

Bad weather – Cinema Walks do not offer any protection from the weather. In the event of weather bad enough to prevent a Walk taking place eg heavy rain, gale force winds, participants will be given the choice of an alternative date or a full refund.

Talk of the Town – Workshop with Kit Griffiths

It has been a whole ten years of colour, cardboard, community, courage and joy on the streets, beaches and venues of Margate, from one day to a range of events yearly. To mark this milestone, Margate Pride is creating Talk of the Town – a new film that captures what Margate Pride means to them.

Made in collaboration with poet Kit Griffiths, Talk of the Town will weave together footage from our community with Kit’s words, and they’re calling on anyone who has ever felt part of Margate Pride to share their moments with them… You can submit here before 10th July
