A Margate pub building is to go under the hammer at auction.
The Fox and Hound, named The Saracen’s Head when the Truman hostelry was rebuilt in 1935– sits in the High Street.
The name Sheldons was given to the pub when it joined the Thorley pubs empire in the 1990s. Thorley’s sold the pub in the 2010s.
It is among 150 lots listed for sale by Clive Emson, the land and property auctioneers, ahead of its next sale.
Currently the pub site is let at £50,000 per annum with empty upper parts that have permission to be converted to provide three one-bedroom and one two-bedroom flats, whilst retaining the manager’s flat.
In March this year it reopened as The Fox and The Hound with former Northern Belle landlord Jonathon Wood at the helm.
Jon Rimmer, auction appraiser, said: “This is a substantial freehold mixed-use property located in Margate’s town centre close to local amenities, the popular seafront and mainline railway station.
“The property, which is well located for Dreamland and Turner Contemporary, comprises a public house with manager’s accommodation above and vacant upper parts with planning permission for change of use into four self-contained flats.
“We have been informed by the seller that the pub has recently undergone a programme of improvements.
“The upper parts, which have separate access off the High Street, are currently arranged as individual letting rooms. Permission has been granted for conversion which, we understand, requires minimal internal alterations to provide the proposed accommodation.”
The pub tenancy is expected to be renewed in June.
The freehold guide price is £750,000-plus.
The auction closes on June 17.
Last time I went there was around 1989. Has it changed much?
The sooner they get rid of this druggy pub the better.
