A 39-year-old man who caused damage, including smashed windows, at 14 Ramsgate town businesses has been jailed for 23 weeks and ordered to pay varying levels of compensation to the affected traders.
Kent Police officers attended the town after receiving reports that several windows of businesses in York Street, Queen Street, King Street and High Street, had been smashed at around 6am on Saturday 31 January.
Among those targeted were Ramsgate Police Station, York Street Flowers, Boots, the former gallery in York Street, British Red Cross, Ramsgate Thrift Store, The i station, Custom tattoo studios, Harbour Bakery and the neighbouring newsagents, Sunrise fish and chips and The Red Lion pub.
Following enquiries Dale Percy, 39, of no fixed address was arrested and charged with causing criminal damage to 14 buildings, theft of a ladder brace, and attempted criminal damage to a vehicle.
He was remanded in custody to appear at Margate Magistrates’ Court on February 2.
Neighbourhood officers have now issued an update on the outcome, saying: “This was an isolated incident, and thanks to the swift actions of the attending officers and support from the public, the male suspect was arrested at the scene.
“He has since been put before the courts and sentenced to 23 weeks in prison, along with a requirement to pay varying levels of compensation to the affected businesses.
“Thank you to everyone in the community who came together so quickly to support the victim stores. Your cooperation and willingness to help truly make a difference.”
The update also includes news of action to tackle antisocial behaviour in the town centre.
It says: “We are currently processing several Community Protection Notice (CPN) applications for individuals who have committed anti-social behaviour in the town centre. These matters are now awaiting their court dates.
“Police will continue to deal with anti‑social behaviour as robustly as possible to ensure Ramsgate remains a safe and welcoming place for everyone.”
If he was no fixed abode this may have been an attempt at getting somewhere warm to sleep out o desperation…

its a possibility, dont know if you are of an age to remember Morris the old merchant sailor who was the town drunk, always smart, he had been known to get himself caught for shoplifting and sent to prison just before xmas so he had a decent meal and a bed for a while

I do, mt grandad knew a fair bit more abotu him , seemed to think he had money and a property but chose the life he had, he used to be around when i was at hereson back in the early 80s

5.55am it started. Shift changeover at 6am, Officers may have been in Margate. So yes they reacted swiftly. Disappointed with the sentence though.

so basicaly hes got away with it , how can they get any money from him ? and as others have refered to , he probably better off in the clink , fed and watered and he does not need to accept reponsibilty for anything
