A landmark occasion unfolded at Thanet Wanderers RUFC last weekend, as the club’s Over 15s SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) team – proudly known as The Lions – took to the field for their first ever competitive fixture.
Their opponents were the formidable Saracens RFC, making the day even more significant for players, families and supporters alike.
Led by team captains Callum and Ash, The Lions played with heart, commitment and pride. The club’s Under 15s SEND team marked the occasion by forming a guard of honour and remaining pitch side to cheer on their friends throughout the match, adding to the spirit of celebration and unity.
The fixture was made possible through close collaboration with the Saracens Foundation. Kieran Hopper, Project Officer at the Foundation and a driving force behind the match, said:
“I heard about the popularity of the SEN group and thought it would be good to give the club some history by playing against Saracens – creating memories and opportunities for people with disabilities to play.”
Andy Bull, Club Development Director at Thanet Wanderers RUFC, has overseen the growth of the SEND team from its earliest days.
Reflecting on the day, he said: “This was the culmination of three years of hard work by the team, resulting in a fantastic, highly competitive game of rugby. This will now become an annual fixture, with us heading to them next season.”
The match itself was played in excellent spirit, full of energy and sportsmanship. In keeping with the inclusive ethos of the day, no scores were recorded – a deliberate decision to keep the focus on participation, enjoyment and teamwork, rather than competition.
In a touching gesture of mutual respect, each team presented the other with a club jersey before awards were handed out to players from both sides. Among the recipients was Thanet captain Callum, who was awarded the ‘Wolf’ Award by Kieran Hopper – recognising a player who may not always score the tries but whose contribution is fundamental to the team’s play and success.
One parent said: “It was a great day and the team made us all and the club proud. Thank you to all the coaches for their efforts – it really showed in all aspects of the game. Long may they continue to move forward showing true togetherness and sportsmanship.”
Thanet Wanderers RUFC extends thanks to the coaches, volunteers and organisers whose dedication made the day possible. The Lions’ roar has now been heard – and it is only growing louder.
