Travelling around the world is a tall order but Newington Community Primary School’s youngsters were more than a match for the task.
Children throughout the school became avid explorers and researchers for a homework Geography Award challenge that involved each year group discovering as much as possible about the delights of countries they were assigned.
The whistle-stop learning journey saw them discover a range of facts about places, culture and heritage as well as finding out about all sorts of customs.
Head Teacher Hannah Tudor was impressed. She said: “What an amazing adventure for our intrepid explorers.
“We know how important it is to acknowledge and celebrate the beautiful world around us and the culture that exists among it.
“This is a fabulous way to learn through a challenge activity – they found out so many differences and similarities between the countries and it is important for their development as it gives them a sense of their place in the community and the world.”
The year groups and their countries were: – Year 1- United Kingdom; Year 2- Australia; Year 3- Egypt; Year 4- Italy; Year 5- Brazil; Year 6- New Zealand.
Mrs Tudor added: “The entries were out of this world (pardon the pun) and there were some exceptional information displays created to highlight the heritage and culture of each destination.
“Our Junior Leadership Team got together to choose a winner from each group based on the content, effort and presentation of the entries.
“It is always a special time when we come together as a community and showcase the talents of our children.”
The winners were Hannah in Year 2, Emily in Year 3, Hira in Year 4, Mia in Year 5, and Phoebe in Year 6.
