This winter, in addition to its regular programme of films, the Palace Cinema in Broadstairs dips into horror with an extravanganza of spinechilling screenings and spooky events for all ages and tastes.
‘Broadscares’ has lots to come throughout November to January, offering new releases, classics, short films, documentaries and family-friendly frights from around the world, many with special introductions and guest filmmaker events.
The programme has been brought together by the Palace team with support and advice from local horror aficionado Alaster Calder, local filmmakers and people from the UK’s top horror film festival, Frightfest.
Palace audience members picking up a special Broadscares card can get a stamp each time they see a Broadscares film or event – three stamps and their next Broadscares film is free!
Corinna Downing, from the Palace, said: “We’re so pleased to have been able to team up with Alaster to bring together a horror season offering everything from comedies to documentaries to and from supernatural spirits to all manner of vampire!
“We’re also really glad to bring excellent short films from new filmmakers into the mix, and to offer lots of ‘behind the scenes’ insight into how the films are made thanks to the filmmakers joining us for Q&As. The October Broadscares programme closes today [October 27] with silent classic NOSFERATU from 1922 plus live piano from Lillian Henley, and we can’t wait for the CORPSE BRIDE event with animator Q&A in half term!”

A special treat to see the classic, dark, animated musical tale of a shy young man and the bride who rises from the grave, followed by a fantastic opportunity to meet animators Andy Gent, Maggie Hayden and Richard Blakey who worked on CORPSE BRIDE (as well as CORALINE, FANTASTIC MR FOX and many more!) and find out how the film was made.

The great lost classic of Irish cinema, the directorial debut from the screenwriter of classic horror The Blood on Satan’s Claw (1971). Now beautifully restored, it weaves Celtic myth into the strange tale of a ‘mad’ young woman in pre-famine Ireland whose powerful true nature is revealed by a feared shaman. The Palace is delighted to welcome writer/director Robert Wynne-Simmons to join us for a special Q&A to discuss the making and rediscovery of the film which kickstarted the rebirth of Irish cinema.

This revealing and moving new documentary explores its’ complex legacy via an emotional journey for his sons Justin and Dominic; they consider the impact of the film on their lives and offer a unique look behind the curtain for fans to come closer to understanding the evolution of a classic. The Palace is delighted to welcome co-directors Justin Hardy and Chris Nunn to join us for a Q&A.
