This term children in Year One at Garlinge Primary School and Nursery have been learning about the significance of the Harvest Festival and how this is a time for people to celebrate the food that is grown.
Pupils have been learning how harvest time takes place in the Autumn and how it is the time of year when lots of fruits and vegetables are harvested and collected ready to be distributed to shops and businesses.
A school spokesperson said: “At Garlinge we are committed to supporting our local community and we think about other people and the ways we may be able to help them through acts of kindness. We focused on thinking about the things we are thankful for and how and where our food comes from.
“We had the pleasure of inviting our parents and carers to join our Harvest assemblies. The backdrop of which emphasised Garlinge Primary School and Nursery’s community spirit, showcasing a wide range of non-perishable food donations such as pasta, rice and tinned goods donated by our pupils and families across our school.
“We would like to thank our parents, carers and the whole school community for their generosity. All donations were greatly received by Thanet Food Link who provide food parcels for families in the local community.
“Thanet Food Link were overwhelmed by the kindness of our families and only just managed to fit everything into their van!”
The assembly began with Year One pupils singing harvest songs which they had persevered to learn throughout the term. The assembly continued with opportunities for the pupils to share the bread they had baked, their harvest artwork and learning experiences throughout the term. A highlight of the assembly was a fantastic performance from all children using Makaton when retelling the story of ‘The Little Red Hen’ which was enthusiastically received by the audience.
Year One pupil Jack said: “I liked singing the songs- my favourite was I can see conkers.” Fellow pupil Abigail said, “I liked the Mums and Dads coming to see our show”.
Anna Northrop, Head of School, said: “The children performed brilliantly in their Year One Harvest Assembly. It was lovely to see the children’s excellent performance of the story of the Little Red Hen using signing and them all singing Harvest songs so proudly.
“I would like to thank all our parents, carers and families for their overwhelmingly generous donations of food and provisions for our Harvest Festival. This has been donated to Thanet Food Link and will benefit many families in our local community”.
