Raise the Roof music fundraiser

Two Ramsgate charities are coming together for a showstopping fundraising event on Friday 4th October.

Pie Factory Music and St George’s Church are teaming up to present a gala fundraiser in the Grade 1 listed church in Ramsgate town centre in a bid to raise vital donations to save Pie’s youth centre following KCC’s decision to sell the building and to allow for vital repairs to St George’s vestry roof.

The event will feature a host of acts who have graduated from Pie’s Emerging Artists programme since it began running in 2018.

Char.B, Claire Pitt Wigmore, debdepan, Evan Williams, Harmony Bo and JanMakesNoise will each perform their signature styles, from punk to rap to funk and soul, electronica and rock, demonstrating the ever-growing talent of Thanet’s young musicians.

Technical production is being provided by Pie alumni James Brown of James Brown AV. There will be a pay bar, with doors opening from 7pm.

Dog Unit

Poppy post-rock outfit Dog Unit will be performing live at Ramsgate Music Hall!

The band make instrumental music that leans just as heavily on the tune-first, purist pop qualities of Burt Bacharach or the Strokes as much as it does the groove and ambiance of the group’s post-rock forebears like Stereolab. Atmospheric build-ups dramatically leading to frantic bangers.

Shapeshifting

A solo exhibition by Bev Howard at the Pie Factory Gallery in Margate

‘Shapeshifting’ explores physical and material structures to uncover and manifest structures of belief in our inner and outer worlds.

Bev Howard is an artist, engineer and Studio-Gallery director (of Hold Creative Spaces in Ramsgate) who, after shape-shifting her own life completely, has been practicing art full time for four years… primarily through drawing, sculpture and installation, but with ever an expanding range of media.

Margate Bookie: The Poetry Slam

4th October, 6pm-9pm,  Dreamland Margate

The Kent Poetry Championship Slam returns to Margate.

10 slammers – with an 11th slot raffled off on the night for those who weren’t able to sign up in advance – will have the stage for 3 minutes each, going head-to-head to win the slam and place in the final fight for the belt as well as a cash price for 1st and 2nd place.

The headliner for the evening is Raymond Antrobus, the winner of the 2019 Ted Hughes award, the 2019 Rathbones Folio Prize, Author of the beautiful poetry collections To Sweeten Bitter, The Perseverance and All the Names Given, and the children’s picture book Can Bears Ski?

The final portion of the event will see the reigning champion, Ciaran Barata-Hynes facing the winner of the Dover slam, Michael Isaacs; the two will have 3 rounds to secure victory, dominance and glory.

Cabaret style performance at Wantsum Productions performance venue. Featuring many of Thanet’s regular performers to sing solos and duets from films, TV and musicals accompanied by a live band. Kkailou x Meg Bird EP Launch Party

A special night of music to celebrate the release of joint EPs.

Kkailou, from Margate, is the latest sonic expression of Steph Dickinson—a songwriter, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist known for her genre-defying musical explorations. Now embarking on an exciting new chapter as a solo artist under the moniker Kkailou, Steph draws inspiration from her Cypriot and Irish heritage.

Her upcoming EP, ‘midnight’, produced in collaboration with United Freedom Collective’s Robbie Redway.

Meg Bird is an emerging young artist right at the cusp of an exciting musical career. Her sound is rooted in the jazz tradition, taking inspiration from vocalists such as Betty Carter and Cecile McLorin Salvant,

She released her debut album ‘Girls Like Lions’ in October 2021 to critical acclaim.

Her second musical contribution, an EP ‘Of Hope’ is due for release this month.

New Street Adventure

Led by singer and songwriter Nick Corbin, New Street Adventure released two albums on the legendary Acid Jazz Records, producing soul-fuelled tunes cut with a distinctly British edge that saw Nick hailed by The Guardian’s Tim Jonze as having “an innate understanding of classic songwriting”.

The Monument

Combining audience participation, drag, spoken word and comedy… at ARK, Cliftonville’s Cultural Space

The Monument is the story of Bogdan, a hard-working Eastern European builder involved in a mysterious construction project, juxtaposed with the true story of the world’s largest Stalin monument.

In this one woman show, the two stories are positioned side by side, creating a dialogue between two individuals, two societies and two moments in history, which encourage audiences to think about the individual & collective power in shaping the world around us.

The Monument is written and performed by Polish-born Margot Przymierska whose artistic practice occupies the fault line between theater, live art and comedy. Margot’s previous work includes the UK tour of Wesele/Wedding which played in Margate in 2018.

A Night of Queer Country Music

Alongside artworks for sale, there will be a free children’s music workshop at 3pm led by composer/performer Lillian Henley and then an evening program kicks off at 6:30pm with an instantly fun bell-ringing workshop from composer/creative director Tom Adams.

You can also catch writer/performer/producer Kit Proudfoot reading a few poems and musical performances from singer/songwriter Christie Mystic and her folk duo Between Two Seas.

There will be drop-in metal embossing with Billie M Vigne/Beer Can Votives, plenty of drinks, nibbles and chats to arouse your curiosity plus paintings, prints, jewellery, sculpture, artist books amongst other things to buy direct from members.

Your Leisure welcomes world-renowned LES MILS exercise instructors to Hartsdown Leisure Centre on Saturday, 5 October for the inaugural GX FitnessFest, a day of fun and energetic group exercise classes led by Les Mills national presenters and local trainers to celebrate the launch of Your Leisure’s new LES MILLS Virtual programme and the momentous 100th release of BODYCOMBATTM.

To get as many people involved as possible, Your Leisure is offering all GX FitnessFest classes to all its members for free and all non-members are invited to join in with the festivities with classes available to book for only £1 each per person, plus, non-members can also take part in the virtual classes on the day for free; so there’s no excuse not to get into the “Groove”.

GX FitnessFest takes place on Saturday, 5 October at Hartsdown Leisure Centre with the first class starting at 8:10am and classes running throughout the day. The Sunken Garden Eco Fair 2024

6th October, noon-4pm

A day filled with fun workshops, inspiring talks and eco ideas for all at the Sunken Garden in Westbrook

Frances Tophill of BBC Gardener’s World will open the programme of talks, sharing her experience of sustainable and productive gardening, followed by ecologist Hugh Warwick, bringing his knowledge and love of hedgehogs and Keith Sacre of Barcham Trees talking about the importance of tree diversity. Other discussions and presentations will cover design, composting and foraging.

Workshops and information points by thirty representatives of local and national organisations sharing their important environmental work, including Pegwell Bay Nature Reserve, Birdwise, Trees for Cities and Windmill Community Garden. From bee-keeping to bird watching, mushrooms to hops, growing edible plants to using less plastic and much more, there will be plenty to discover and discuss.

Teenage Kicks

Six acts are performing at the Teenage Kicks music event on the afternoon of Sunday 6 October, at Ramsgate Boating Pool, as part of a music festival organised by the the cassette tape themed arts project, Mixtape88/00.

All the performers are under 20 and just starting out on their music journeys – some have released singles; others are on Spotify; and a couple of the acts have played at the Ramsgate Music Hall this summer. It’s a very eclectic mix of original music as well as covers of bands such as Arctic Monkeys and Franz Ferdinand, and it promises to be a lot of fun.

A weird and wonderful mix of musicians presenting ideas and storytelling in music and sound at ARK, Cliftonville’s Cultural Space

Arctic Circle’s Daylight Music has, for over fifteen years, become an important part of London’s live music scene, with a weird and wonderful mix of musicians presenting ideas and storytelling in music and sound, alongside delicious cake, in some of the most splendid and iconic venues. Now it finds itself in Kent for an afternoon expedition in the welcoming space of ARK – Cliftonville Cultural Space.

Cardiff-based The Gentle Good (Gareth Bonello) has released many acclaimed records with this project including those which have won both the Welsh Language Music Prize and Welsh Language Album of the Year.

Liz Ikamba’s music cross-pollinates musical and cultural influences, seamlessly blending the rich and vibrant sounds of Congo folk music with elements of jazz, soul, reggae, hip hop, and more. Singing in both English and Lingala, Liz weaves together a personal and ancestral story, with songs speaking largely from her experience as a dual heritage woman and artist living in the UK.

Alice Boyd a musician, sound artist and audio producer whose work blends voice, ambient electronic textures, and novel field recording techniques to explore our interconnectedness with the natural world and reveal the hidden sounds of our environments.
