Your Leisure will celebrate the  50th anniversary of Hartsdown swimming pool in Margate with a free family fun day on Saturday, 20 July.

The swimming pool at Hartsdown Leisure Centre held its grand opening on Saturday, 20 July 1974 at 2:15 pm and was the district’s first indoor pool. Your Leisure, the trust that operates the pool on behalf of Thanet District Council, is marking the occasion with the day of fun to highlight the importance of local leisure facilities to the community.

Warren Reeves, Managing Director of Your Leisure Kent Ltd, said: “Hartsdown has provided opportunities to swim and stay active for 50-years. The pool has been at the heart of Margate for half a century and well over 100,000 children have been taught to swim there. It has hosted galas and welcomed celebrities from the world of swimming including Duncan Goodhew MBE to more  Mark Foster.

“We’re pleased to be celebrating the 50th anniversary this year exactly 50 years to the day of the original grand opening. I hope everyone will come along to celebrate.”
