Video: This young seal was so happy to be rescued she couldn’t wait to get in the cage!

The young seal was stranded on the prom

A young female seal stranded on the beach at Birchington today (March 21) was rescued – and then helped back on her way – by the British Divers Marine Life Rescue team.

The volunteers were called out this morning to Coleman Stairs where the seal, thought o be about 5 months old, had got stuck on the prom and the tide had gone out.

BDML member Sheila Stone said: “We checked her and she looked healthy and was certainly feisty. She started moving down the prom, so I put the cage in front of her to stop her, and she climbed in it!

“We then transported her to Minnis Bay and released her. The tide goes out a very long way at Minnis so we walked about half a mile out, and the quicksand was taking our shoes. We released her as close to the sea as we could get.

“ It was wonderful to watch her go in and swim off.”
