Upton scoops best schools choir cup

For the third year in a row the choir from Upton junior school at Broadstairs have sung their way to success.

The 60-strong group impressed judges at the Thanet Music and Drama Festival 2017 to maintain their grip on the best schools choir cup for another year.

They performed the lively Got To Pick A Pocket or Two from the classic musical Oliver! and the emotional Stronger Together that was a hit for Gareth Malone and the Military Wives Choir.

Executive head teacher Michaela Lewis said: “Wow. To win three years running is a fantastic achievement and really highlights the quality of our talented young singers and musicians.

“It was pleasing because we faced stiff opposition in the final three from two good independent schools – St Lawrence College at Ramsgate and St Faiths from Ash.”

Music teacher Peter Langridge said: “It was a very strong competition this year and we won by a single point. What really impressed the adjudicator was the variety of our performances and the variety and dynamic range we demonstrated.

“The choir deserves a huge ‘well done’ and our thanks go to their accompanist David Lammler who is always very supportive.”

The competition was held at St Phillips Church in Cliftonville and the awards were presented at a gala event at Birchington Centre.

Upton Junior School is part of the Viking Academy Trust with Chilton Primary School and Ramsgate Free School.
