Upton pupils bring poetry to life in special show

Poetry at Upton

Poetry has been brought to life on stage with a special performance by children at Upton Junior School in Broadstairs.

The Year 5 group have been inspired by a diverse range of poets who they have explored as part of their literacy learning since the start of this year.

They include Spike Milligan, Pam Ayers, Michael Rosen, Brian Todd, Lewis Carroll and Gareth Lancaster.

As well as researching and writing about the poets the groups decided to go one further and add choreography to their presentations, while some even used props such as a toy cat and a large tea mug.

Their performance poetry recital for family and friends in a packed main hall was described as “a fantastic celebration of the many and varied styles of poetry the pupils have been enjoying” by Head of Year 5 Nicola Sedgewick.

She said: “They showed a great deal of confidence and performed very well. The recital also demonstrated their communication skills and helped reinforce self-esteem and team building. It was a lovely event which we all enjoyed.”
