The Old Post Office in Margate is open and the transformation is stunning

The Old Post Office restaurant and deli in Margate is now open after a stunning remodelling of the interior.

The business, owned by Sarah Hagues and run with head chef Tristan Fitt, means a new lease of life for the Grade II listed building.

It had been the site for Margate’s post office since 1910 but the service was moved out in 2015 to WH Smith in the High Street, leaving the lower floors of the property empty.

The upper floors are residential apartments. Some of the original lay out of the listed building has been reinstated and the interior has been painstakingly refurbished.

The Cecil Square restaurant uses local suppliers and there is also an on-site deli and bakery.

Deli St. Johns offers artisan bread, sandwiches, freshly-made salad and cake which can be eaten in or taken away.

There are also farmhouse cheeses  and a shop dedicated to seasonal fruit and vegetables, homemade jams and chutneys, fresh-baked breads, biscuits and cakes, extra virgin olive oils, vinegars and dry store ingredients.

The menu offers a range of interesting dishes. Foie Gras, which was on the sample menu, has been removed in response to public comments.

A statement on The Old Post Office facebook page says: “Our ingredients will be ethically sourced with fine quality goods from local suppliers where we can.

“The ambitions of our chefs are for our customers to experience in food which is made with thought, care and passion-their endeavours are something we hope you enjoy.

“It’s an experience we hope you try, with an open mind and positive outlook. We look forward to meeting many of you.”

  1. It all sounds wonderful having another 5* eatery in Margate, but I don’t think it’s a coincidence they are right by the council offices. Maybe the other one is too far to walk. I just wonder if they were able to obtain grants, the same as the other major converters of premium sites ????
