The new ‘Margate Post Office’ restaurant and deli will be opening soon

A new independent business is getting ready to open in Margate

A new restaurant in the former Margate Post Office building is almost ready to open – with the October menu now posted to social media

Plans to convert the ground floor and basement of  the building into a restaurant, deli and bar  were given the go ahead by Thanet council last year.

The application to convert part of the Cecil Square building was submitted by Sarah Hagues from Folkestone.

The building had been a post office for 105 years until the service relocated to WH Smiths in the town in 2015.

The upper floors are residential apartments. Some of the original lay out of the Grade II listed building has been reinstated.

The restaurant focus will be on using local suppliers. There will also be an onsite bakery.

In a planning statement Mrs Hagues said: “Informal dining will take place all day, serving as a breakfast/lunch/afternoon tea and dinner location.

“The deli area of the space will be a conventional retail space selling artisan take-away foods and drinks, baked goods and local produce.

“It is an independent enterprise, not a franchise.”

On Twitter the head chef has revealed a menu for October, saying the opening date will be announced soon.
