The Minnis Bay Bar is officially opened after its £1million refurb – and it looks great

The Minnis Bay

The Minnis Bay Bar and Brasserie in Birchington has been officially reopened after a stunning £1million transformation.

The reopening was conducted by Shepherd Neame chief executive Jonathan Neame, with broadcasting legend Barbara Sturgeon and Councillor Neville Hudson, the chairman of Birchington Parish Council, as guests of honour.

Speaking at the event Jonathan said: “I was brought up hearing tales of the glory days of the Thanet coast and it feels like those days are returning.

“By providing a great eating and drinking destination and creating 12 new jobs  and supporting 35 more we are making a contribution to the local economy and the renaissance of this beautiful coastline.”

‘Art Deco glory days’

Barbara, who was born and raised in Birchington, said:  “I’m thrilled that Shepherd Neame has invested substantially in the future of a building that’s weathered many storms. The stunning, stylish Minnis Bar and Brasserie is a contemporary salute to its former Art Deco glory days, our fantastic beach and “the loveliest skies”.

Cllr Hudson added: “We in Birchington are delighted that Shepherd Neame has chosen Minnis Bay for a significant investment. The compete refurbishment and upgrading of the Minnis Bay Bar and Brasserie will enhance the wonderful natural facilities available at Minnis Bay, which is well known for its beautiful coastline, stunning sunsets and extremely safe bathing.”

The reopening was also marked with a gift of £500 to the local branch of the RNLI.

The refurb

Over the course of an intense 16 week construction programme the Minnis Bay was substantially remodelled and now boasts a new bar, with a coffee lounge and a 100-seat restaurant.

On the first floor a glazed extension affords panoramic views. Outside a new sea-facing terrace has been constructed seating up to 70 diners and fitted with wind break screens.

The ice cream beach hut has been totally refurbished and new toilets, staff area and cellar complete the building work.

The menu was given a complete overhaul, taking its location as its cue and featuring classic and modern seafood, such as whole grilled lemon sole, moules and frites and traditional cod and chips
