The Blackbyrds announced as latest headliners at the Margate Soul Festival

The Blackbyrds

American R&B and jazz funk band The Blackbyrds have been announced as the latest headliners for the Margate Soul Weekend.

With eight albums released for Fantasy from 1974 to 1980, The Blackbyrds became an inspiration to late 1970s and early 1980s British jazz-funk acts such as Light of the World.

More recently, they have made an impact on the hip-hop generation with Gang Starr, Da Lench Mobb, and Full Force sampling their music. Their 1975 song “Rock Creek Park” from the City Life album has been sampled numerous times by groups and artists such as Eric B. & Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Massive Attack, Ice Cube, Heavy D, Nas and Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five.

Margate Soul Weekend is back and promising that the main Sunset Stage will be bigger, better and open longer for 2017.

Hosted by Mi-Soul Radio, it will feature live performances both on Saturday and Sunday, during the festival on August 4-6, alongside a huge line up of DJs.

The event boats more than 50 DJs, two stages, seven themed venues and four major live acts.

It kicks off at 2pm on Friday, August 4.

The soul festival takes over  Margate, including the old town, market, Winter Gardens and harbour.

As well as the improved Sunset Stage, a huge outdoor arena overlooking the sea, there will be a unique combination of ticketed large-scale outdoor live shows, free family-friendly, street performances, DJ led carnival street parties and an eclectic mix of club nightlife.

Arrested Development

Among the other headliners are Arrested Development, an American alternative hip hop group that formed in Atlanta in 1988.
