Students from six Thanet schools will take to the stage for Semele Mash Up

Getting ready for the Semele Mash Up

More than 250 Thanet school pupils will team up with professional singers, a director and musical director from Garsington Opera for All to perform short works and scenes  inspired by Handel’s sparkling masterpiece Semele.

The youngsters are from King Ethelbert School, Hartsdown Academy, Chatham and Clarendon Grammar School, St Saviour’s CD Junior School, St Peter-in-Thanet CE Primary School and Dane Court Grammar School.

During the past fortnight they have been working with the team from Garsington Opera for All, exploring the different ingredients that are involved in opera including vocal work, composition, movement, drama and design.

The sessions  have resulted in the youngsters creating their own mini production, the Semele Mash Up, which will be performed at St Lawrence College in Ramsgate on November 15.

For many of the students this will be their first encounter with live opera.

Paul Grist, from Garsington Opera for All, said: “The workshops provide local children with an introduction to opera; teaching them how to tell a story through singing, acting and movement.  The response from the children of Thanet has been fantastic and they have all worked incredibly hard and have found the process very rewarding.”

The workshops and the Semele Mash Up will be presented as part of Looping the Loop Festival at 6pm at St Lawrence College, Taylor Theatre, College Road.
