Some ‘extra actors’ almost scooped a role in the Juliet, Naked movie being filmed in Thanet

Getting ready to film in Broadstairs

The Juliet, Naked movie being filmed in Thanet this week almost ended up with some extra stars yesterday (August 1).

The crew and stars including actor Chris O’Dowd were shooting scenes in Broadstairs and Ramsgate yesterday for the adaptation of the Nick Hornby novel.

An inside source told The Isle of Thanet News: “When all the supporting artistes were lined up ready to be dressed and go into the set, the AD in charge said, “Wait a minute, we seem to have too many extras.” What had happened was some of the passers-by had joined the line, hoping to get in on the action!”

Star Chris O’Dowd also caused a stir in Harbour Street.

The source said: “The shoot was concentrated in Harbour Street, one of the main routes down to the beach for families. So, there was lots of people stopping to watch or wanting to walk through – and when they spotted Chris O’Dowd, everyone wanted to pose with him for a quick selfie.

“Fortunately, he is a lovely man, and was happy to oblige. He was even unfazed when one family, obviously tired out after a day on the beach, just stormed through the set, rowing with each other, totally oblivious to the lights and cameras!”

Crews have also been filming in Chandos Square, Ramsgate seafront and Wellington Crescent.

Ramsgate Maritime Museum was temporarily renamed Sandcliff Seaside Museum during Monday’s shoot

The production stars Rose Byrne, Ethan Hawke and Chris O’Dowd as well as Azhy Robertson (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit), Lily Brazier (People Just Do Nothing), Ayoola Smart (Vera) and stand-up comedian Jimmy O. Yang.

The movie tells the story of Annie (played by Rose Byrne), the long-suffering girlfriend of Duncan (Chris O’Dowd), and her unlikely transatlantic romance with once revered, now faded, singer-songwriter, Tucker Crowe (Ethan Hawke), who also happens to be the subject of Duncan’s musical obsession.

The crews have now finished filming on the isle.

Crews spotted at Kingsgate Bay this week were from a separate team filming an editorial photoshoot for magazine Rain.
