You can count on pupils and staff at Upton Junior School in Broadstairs to have fun on a special maths day.
And you can count on the school to support charity activities through the year – such as the NSPCC Numbers Day 2018.
The whole school embraced the special event with a host of different number–related activities, challenges, puzzles and tasks to illustrate the many ways that numbers and maths are used in everyday life.
Although it was bitterly cold, pupils and staff took part in an outdoor challenge to see what structures they could make in the wooded area at the back of the school using maths shapes. These included shelters, pyramids and triangles created by the children using sticks, branches, tape and string.
It was also a fundraising non uniform day with each pupil and staff member donating to wear their own clothes with a numbers theme. These included an array of outfits including some with equations and sums on and others bearing maths slogans and messages.
The event was co-ordinated by Upton teacher Hayden Stevens who became the Maths Wizard for the day, complete with colourful gown, pointed hat and wand.
He said: “It was a fantastic opportunity to delve into the wider uses and applications of numbers for us all.
“All the children and staff really got involved and spent the day exploring maths and numbers and how they cross from the classroom into our everyday lives.
“We had great fun inside and outside and it also helped pupils with teamwork and communication skills too.”
The non-uniform numbers day also included a cake sale and the total raised for the NSPCC was £526.
