Rogue builders are reported to be targeting older people in Thanet

Rogue traders warning

The Ageless Thanet organisation, run by Social Enterprise Kent to provide activities and advice for people 50 and over, has issued a warning about rogue traders on the isle.

The group has received reports of rogue builders targeting older residents in Westgate and Broadstairs.

In a statement Ageless Thanet said: “These ‘builders’ have been targeting older residents and insisting upon carrying out work for them, from roof repairs to paving drives, using intimidation to get homeowners to agree to works.

“These works were unnecessary and carried out to an appalling standard, which requires genuine repair by a professional to make good.

“Whilst we would never wish to alarm people, please be aware, tell your friends, relatives and neighbours and remember the following advice and tips:

Reputable tradespeople do not cold-call.

If in doubt, do not open your door to people you don’t know.

If you believe your house requires work/repair, get three written quotes/estimates. Ask friends, neighbours, family and colleagues for recommendations and, if possible, go and look at examples of their work.”
