A Ramsgate man will have to pay out £1,172 in fines and court costs after Thanet council prosecuted him for flytipping.
At Folkestone Magistates’ Court on Monday (November 20) Adam Bourland-Courtney, of Boundary Road, was found guilty in his absence of not taking all reasonable measures to meet his duty of care obligations under Section 34 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990. He was fined £220 for clean-up costs, £257.54 in investigation costs as well as legal costs of £665. The sum totalled £1,172.54.
The incident came to the council’s attention after an enforcement officer found several black bags containing refuse belonging to Mr Bourland-Courtney on Boundary Road alley.
TDC Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Environmental Services Cllr Lin Fairbrass said:“Thanet is a beautiful place to live and work and we continue to work hard to keep it this way. This is why we have a zero-tolerance approach towards fly-tipping.
“It is an anti-social crime which cost us £109,550 to clean up last year. The majority of people dispose of their waste correctly, but sadly there’s a minority who simply fly-tip the waste – leaving the taxpayer to foot the bill.”
Thanet council is continuing to clamp down on litter louts and fly-tippers in a bid to keep the district clean and welcoming. The drive includes ‘Who Did It?’ style campaigns where images taken by Enforcement Officers of illegally dumped waste are posted online.
