Police investigating cause of fire at former Margate school site

Kent Police

Police have confirmed that the circumstances of a fire at a former Margate school site last night (November 15) are being investigated.

Emergency crews were called to a fire at a portacabin on the former Laleham Gap school site in Northdown Park Road at 7.05pm.

Three engines attended and used three main jets and one hydrant to deal with the fire. Crews finished at the scene at 8.30pm. The portacabin was destroyed by the fire.

It is the second time the vacant site has been hit by fire. In June a fire was started in a disused portacabin on school grounds. It was completely destroyed. The blaze also spread, causing further damage to two further portacabins and an area of grass. Kent Police investigated that incident as a suspected arson.

Police have now confirmed last night’s incident is also suspicious.

A Kent Police spokesman said: “The circumstances of the fire are being investigated.”

Laleham Gap school is now based in Ozengell Place in Ramsgate, on grounds by the Royal Harbour Academy upper site.
