Police foil attempted Westwood Cross cash machine theft

Westwood Cross

An attempt to steal a cash machine from Westwood Cross this morning (August 23)has been foiled by police.

Detectives from the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate are now investigating following the incident in the early hours.

At 3.06am officers were made aware of a JCB digger being driven along Manston Road in the direction of Ramsgate.

One hour later it was reported that the same digger had been found next to a vehicle with no roof in the Westwood Cross car park.

Police attended and two vehicles made off from the scene. Enquiries to locate the people inside are ongoing.

Detective Sergeant Jason Booth said: “This type of suspicious behaviour is consistent with an attempt to steal a cash machine, so it is pleasing that on this occasion we were able to get there first and prevent a possible crime from taking place.

“We are always very grateful when members of the public report things to us that seem out of place, such as a digger being driven in the middle of the night and being parked next to a car with no roof.

“I would always encourage people to get in touch by calling 101 if they see or hear anything suspicious, as they could be helping to stop an offence from being committed.

“We would also like to hear from anyone with information about this particular incident. Please call the appeal line on 01843 222289 quoting reference 23-0120.

“Alternatively call Kent Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.”
