Scores of boats took part in the biggest Ramsgate Week regatta to date, finishing with the Gold Cup on Friday.

Participants came from across the UK and Europe to race on the coast off Ramsgate.

The event, hosted by the Royal Temple Yacht Club,  was one of tough conditions due to wind and rain.

In the final Gold Cup race 11 boats did not make the start line and an inshore route to Deal and back was chosen to shield the boats from the worst of the spring tide.

John and Michelle Stonely of Pippy won the cup. Mallard came second and Zephyros third.

The week hosted coastal races, the Round the Goodwins competition, the QE2 Cup and the Gold Cup finale.

A spokesman for RTYC said: “We have a reputation as the friendly alternative to Cowes and more boats came to us this year as they prefer our set up, the closeness of the club to the harbour and just love the friendliness of our club.

“This year we had two young teams from Holland, Team Delft Challenge and Team Heiner Talents. Heiner had been before and did really well but this year were beaten by Delft. They had a great time and hope to be back next year.”

The event ended with a pirates’ night celebration at the RTYC on the final evening.
