Hurrah - Cecil Square now has a Christmas tree

Margate’s Cecil Square Christmas tree has arrived!

A fundraiser was launched this month after it was revealed  there would be no Christmas tree in the square this year.

The town’s tree, which is funded by the Margate mayor and charter trustees, is in the Old Town instead.

The decision  followed last year’s “shambolic” tree that was put in place with just one string of lights.

The display was so appalling that local companies, including Falcon Electrical and Security Ltd, Off The Hook Productions,  DAM High Access, Goodwins Power Tools Margate, and CommunityAd Web Ltd, plus residents including schoolgirl Mia Kirkden got together to decorate and light the tree properly.

This year Falcon Electrical & Security Limited, CommunityAd Web Ltd  and Off The Hook Productions have stepped in again – raising funds for the tree, lights and installation.

The crowdfunder  page, created by Rachel Hamlin, Louis and Kelly Stacey, aimed to hit a £1,200 target. So far donations total £1,046.

The cash was enough for the tree, from Westgate Pet and Garden Centre, which has now been put in place by Great West Autos Transport and Crane Hire.

Last year’s light switch on

Lights are also paid for so the drive is now on to raise the rest of the money for tree decorations in time for the planned light up event on Friday, December 8 – more details to come when the planning process is finalised.
