Margate mental health support group secures 2018 funding

SpeakUpCIC has secured funding

Mental health support group SpeakUpCIC has not had its funding withdrawn by Kent County Council.

The group, based in Margate but working across east Kent, was informed last October that funding to provide service user forums would end in March 2018 and new commissioning arrangements would be put in place.

But the group has now confirmed KCC has granted its £67,466 funding without any reduction.

The good news follows on the heels of a second successful event held at Turner Contemporary by the group last month.

SpeakUpCIC managing director Maggie Gallant (above, centre) said: “We’d like to thank everybody for their hard work in making the Listen Up 2 event such a fantastic afternoon. It was a truly amazing way for us to close out 2017.

“This event marked a special occasion for us as well as we have been informed that we will continue to be funded next year, without a reduction by KCC. For this, we’d like to thank Emma Hanson and her commissioning team at KCC for all they did to make this possible.

“The SpeakUp event this Christmas was a most wonderful life affirming, uplifting event. It was really great to have been a part of it. Whilst we all acknowledge the chronic depression, anxiety, and disabilities with which members of Speak-Up have to cope, we have learned that through our collective experience, our love and support for each other as a Group that it is this, that gets us through the difficult times. “

The group also extended thanks to supporters Raushan;John L Gibson; Rosamund Dixon; Cllr Iris Johnston; Cllr Barry Lewis and Cllr Emma Dawson.
