Heritage Open Days: A tour of St George’s Church in Ramsgate

As part of Heritage Open Days this weekend St George’s Church in Ramsgate has opened up for tours.

It is one of 30 Thanet  venues offering free entry for people to experience the area’s rich history, architecture and culture.

Those taking part in the tours will be able to see the Lantern Tower, Dunkirk Memorial Window and Henry Weigall Mural.

Visitors will also be able to see the replacement flagpole, installed last month – almost four years after the original was knocked over in an accident – and experience some breathtaking views from the top of the tower.

These photos by Brian Whitehead show what’s on offer.

Nationally the Heritage Open Days festival operates as part of the National Trust, with funding from players of People’s Postcode Lottery.

Established in 1994, it is England’s contribution to the European Heritage Days, which is held annually in September in 50 signatory states to the European Cultural Convention.
