From abandoned baby to celebrated cabaret artist – Fancy Chance brings her show to Cliftonville

Fancy Chance is heading to the Tom Thumb Theatre

Embark on an extraordinary journey with one of London’s most celebrated cabaret performers: Fancy Chance. Her debut autobiographical show Flights of Fancy touches down in Cliftonville this March as prelude to the Power of Women festival.

A globe-trotting, time-travelling mini-spectacular with turbulent polemics and unexpectedly poignant stop-offs, Flights of Fancy tells the true story of the artist’s journey from Korean refugee to darling of the international cabaret scene. In-flight entertainment includes songs and scenarios written and performed by the artist and developed and directed by Nathan Evans.

Fancy said: For years I’ve wanted to create something long-form that allows me to expand on themes such as feminism, racism and body politics which I’ve explored in shorter work, using my own experiences as a starting point. Which isn’t to say it’ll all be serious, but there may be tears amongst the laughter.”

Fancy’s travels started prematurely when, as an abandoned baby, her life took an unchartered turn. She said: To this day I know nothing of my birth parents or birth name. If I hadn’t been adopted into a white family from the USA in the 1970s, then found a home in London, who might I have been? This show is used to explore the politics of identity and migration, the ethics of interracial adoption and global gentrification and to leave the audience questioning their own privileges and perspectives”.

Fancy’s work incorporates comedy, burlesque, drag, circus, cabaret and live art.

In 2009 she was crowned Alternative Miss World by Andrew Logan after hanging by her hair from the rafters of the Roundhouse and in 2016 she collaborated with Marisa Carnesky on Carnesky’s Incredible Bleeding Woman.

Flights of Fancy is at the Tom Thumb Theatre, 2 Eastern Esplanade, Cliftonville, on March 4 from 8pm.
