Fire crews help rescue stranded seal pup in Birchington

The rescue

Fire crews helped rescue a seal pup after it became stranded on a Birchington beach last night (25 August).

The RSPCA phoned Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) for assistance at around 9.15pm.

After an initial assessment by a KFRS officer, the local crew from Margate fire station were called to Beresford Gap to help.

Working with the RSPCA, firefighters put the two month old seal, thought to be about 2 foot in length, into a KFRS body bag and carried it from the beach into the care of the RSCPA.

It is believed the seal pup, which was alive and well following its ordeal, had become stranded on the beach after the tide went out.
