Everything you need to know about the Margate Soul Festival

Margate Soul Festival

Candi Staton has had to cancel her  appearance at the Margate Soul Festival next month.

But there are plenty of brilliant acts still taking part, including Gwen Dickey of Rose Royce, Arrested Development and The Blackbyrds.

The festival, on August 4-6, will host more than 100 DJ’s across 10 venues and feature live performances from an all-star international line up.

There will be an improved Sunset Stage – a huge outdoor arena overlooking the sea – a dedicated house room with a stellar line up and a unique combination of ticketed large-scale outdoor live shows, free family friendly street performances, DJ led carnival street parties and the most eclectic mix of club nightlife.

The Redstripe Sunset Stage  will be on Fort Lower Promenade at the rear of the main indoor venue, The Winter Gardens.

Saturday, August 5

Appearing on the new Red Stripe Sunset Stage and the Main Hall will be Arrested Development, Gwen Dickey, Marc Evans, Trevor Nelson and Paul Trouble Anderson.

Sunday, August 6 (carnival day)

The soul continues on Carnival Sunday with Jazz funk legends The Blackbyrds, Latin Soul and Salsa stalwarts Joe Bataan and Gerardo Frisina and an exclusive MSF performance by MF Robots, formed by Jan Kincaid, founder of the Brit Jazz & Funk band Brand New Heavies.

Tom Glide will showcase his new album Divas Got Soul with guest vocalists Sel, Chidi & Hil St Soul. Singer songwriter Greg Blackman will also be appearing.

All weekend

Free activities will be taking place across the Old Town from midday Saturday and Sunday, including for the first time a Spoken Word, Open Mic and Workshop corner located at the new Beet Bar. ‘Spoken @ Margate Soul Festival’, will feature some of the biggest names to headline Margate’s Soul Food and Street Sonnets poetry night.

Festival founder Eli Thompson said: “The festival has gone from strength to strength, in spite of the tough times Margate has experienced, and continues to grow. Our festival partner Mi-Soul Radio, broadcasting on DAB, online and through mobile APP, has been a welcome voice projecting a consistently positive image of our town.”

Tickets can be bought by calling, in person, at Margate Winter Gardens box office or by phone.  Standard day and weekend tickets are available from £27.50. Call 01843 292795.
