East Kent Mencap needs your help to stage one-day festival

East Kent Mencap will stage a one-day festival this Summer

East Kent Mencap is bidding to bag a cash boost from the Tesco Bags of Help initiative.

Tesco teamed up with Groundwork to launch its community funding scheme, which sees grants of £4,000, £2,000 and £1,000 – all raised from the 5p bag levy – being awarded to local community projects.

Three groups in every Tesco region have been shortlisted to receive the cash award and shoppers are being invited to head along to Tesco stores in Margate to vote for who they think should take away the top grant.

East Kent Mencap is one of the groups on the shortlist. With its grant, the charity plans to have a one-day festival for people with a learning disability.

The festival will take place on Thursday, August 3 at Margate Football Club. There will be plenty to enjoy, including music from local bands, food outlets and stalls selling festival merchandise and professional coaches to support people to take part in a variety of sports.

Fundraising Manager, Jane Brooke said: “It’s great to have the support of our local Tescos and we’re excited to have this chance to bring to life our festival for people with a learning disability.”

Voting is open in stores throughout May and June. Customers will cast their vote using a token given to them at the check-out in store each time they shop.
