Thanet council officers have visited a Travellers’ encampment in Ramsgate.
Caravans were moved onto the site at the top of Jackey Bakers field a week ago.
It is at least the third encampment to set up home in Thanet in the last two months.
In April members of the travelling community took over the green in Dane Valley. A second group moved onto the green just days after the first were moved on.
A group was moved on from Jackey Bakers in July last year after some 15 caravans were taken onto the sports field.
Private land
The site currently being used is private land, owned by an isle farmer, and does not come under the local authority.
A Thanet council spokesman said: “Our team have been on site on site and the encampment in Jackey Bakers is not actually on TDC land – it is the other side of the very small picket fence and the land is owned by a farmer.
“We have made contact and advised the owner but legal responsibility for removal lies with the them.
“Any nuisance or disorder complaints will be passed to Kent police who are the only other agency with powers to remove. We are taking measures to further secure our site.”
The process
The landowner can attempt to agree a leaving date with the Travellers or take proceedings in the County Court under the Civil Procedures Rules 1998 to obtain a court order for their eviction as trespassers.
They may be in breach of planning legislation and the Caravan Sites Act 1960 unless they have already obtained planning permission for a caravan site.
If there is no planning permission the council may take proceedings against the landowner to require removal of the illegally parked caravans.
