Apprentice Ryan Holden has received a cheque for £500 from East Kent College to help him achieve his aim of competing at the highest levels in target archery.
The 19-year-old is currently working towards his Level 3 NVQ in plumbing and heating, as an apprentice trained at the Broadstairs campus. One of his passions away from his course is competitive archery. He recently took part in the European Youth Cup in Porec, Croatia, competing as part of Team GB.
Following the loss of external funding, Ryan has been faced with growing costs to continue his quest towards Tokyo 2020. As part of the college’s work to support its students in their outside interests, Ryan has been given £500 sponsorship by East Kent College.
Principal of East Kent College, Broadstairs campus, Paul Manning, said: “Ryan’s shown immense commitment to his archery and we obviously wanted to show our support for this. As one of our students we’ve seen him develop his skills and know how diligently he works on every task he undertakes. It’s wonderful to support his talent competing for Team GB, and we’re very proud of his accomplishments.”
Ryan’s now aiming to compete in the World Championships in October following a successful summer of selection events with the last one starting on 21 August. The World Championships will be taking place in Argentina, making sponsorship of great importance.
Ryan said: “I’m passionate about my sport, and this funding will really help me as I continue down the road to Tokyo 2020. I’ve had a great summer season, and am feeling really well prepared to go forward to the World Championships in the autumn.
“It’s fantastic to have the backing of the college and really highlights that East Kent College isn’t just about a great technical education, they want to help you in everything you do. I would like to thank the Principal and staff for their support.”
