Burglars have stolen tools, red diesel and a trailer from transport firm’s Manston depot

Taft International has had equipment stolen from its Manston base

A transport company with a base in Manston has been burgled – just days after announcing it was closing down.

Taft International Transport has been in business for 43 years. The firm has workshops in Manston and a headquarters in Canterbury.

Last Wednesday (November 1) an announcement was made on the company’s facebook page about the closure, saying: “We would like to inform you all that after 43 years, Taft International has decided to close the doors. We decided that it is time for us to enjoy the simpler things in life without the stresses and strains of running a transport company, albeit, a very successful one.

‘Enjoyable times’

“We have all had very enjoyable times over the years but we are now looking forward to a slower more relaxed pace of life. There have been the usual rumours circulating throughout the industry regarding the company’s decision, but the truth is, we are going out while we are on top, it’s as simple as that.

“We would also like to take this opportunity to thank our employees and customers, both past and present, in helping us make Taft International the success story that it has become. Thank you also to all our FB ‘likers’ for your support. We wish you all good luck in the future and thank you all again for your support. With warmest regards, Richard, Alison, Jane, Robin and Jacky.”

Taft International Transport Ltd was established in 1974 by Robin and Jacky Taft. Son, Richard and daughter, Alison joined the family business in 1988.

Targeted

Three days after the announcement burglars targeted the yard opposite the RAF Manston History Museum in Manston Road.

The break-in, which took place in the early hours of Sunday morning, was caught on CCTV, which showed the raiders leaving at 5.55am.

Some 1,500 litres of red diesel, numerous heavy commercial air tools, various hand tools, Makita battery 18v tools, and a welder were among the items taken, which were transported from the site on Taft International’s blue twin wheeled 10’ x 5’ trailer.

Reward

The company has reported the incident to police and is offering a reward for any information that helps track down the culprits.
