Broadstairs pupils learn beach safety rules from Thanet lifeguards

Thanet lifeguards visit Upton pupils

Have fun and stay safe at the seaside – that was the clear and simple message for children at Upton Junior School in Broadstairs.

Year 6 pupils received their annual pre-summer talk from a team of lifeguards who said that while Thanet has miles of award-winning safe beaches, it is important to understand simple safety rules.

They explained  their role, where they can be found on local beaches, the meaning of the different advisory and warning flags displayed at the seaside and how to stay safe.

They also held interactive demonstrations with pupils and showed them a range of safety equipment including their distinctive yellow surfboards.

Year 6 teacher Athanasia Papa-Adams said: “We are so lucky to have so many lovely beaches close to where we live, so it is very important to communicate the possible dangers as well and ensure that the children are aware of ways to stay safe.”

Upton Junior School is part of the Viking Academy Trust with Chilton Primary School and Ramsgate Free School.
