An MoD spokesman confirmed the dive team had been on the scene but said the call had been a false alarm.

A Kent Police spokesman said: “Kent Police was called at 2.45pm to a report of an unexploded wartime device being found on the beach of St Mildred’s Bay, Westgate On Sea.

“Due to the tide times, Kent Police officers and the MOD’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal team attended the beach this morning at 10.30am, however the device was not located. The area was deemed safe and no risk to the public was identified.”

Officers from the Army bomb disposal team have been dealing with wartime munitions in Cliffsend this month, carrying out several controlled explosions on land at, and surrounding, Pegwell Country Park.

On June 29 a controlled explosion was carried out by the Royal Logistics Corp Explosive Ordnance Device team from Folkestone.

They dealt with the wartime bomb which had been dug up during an excavation by power cable workers.

A spokesman for the MoD said: “It was a routine disposal of conventional World War Two munitions.

The team were on site at Cliffsend

Further explosions were carried out the following day and the team was back on July 2, in the area across from the former Sportsman pub, to carry out two more controlled explosions.

Another was carried out on July 6 and a further two controlled explosions took place on July 14.
