Bid to make Ramsgate a kitesurfing hotspot backed by record-breaker Lewis Crathern

Ramsgate could become the destination for kitesurfers bidding to break world records.

Active Ramsgate, a scheme run by Ramsgate Town Council, is helping to launch kitesurfing lessons and tuition on Ramsgate Sands in the wake of the record breaking jump by kitesurfing champ Lewis Crathern last year.

Lewis headed to Ramsgate last November champion and jumped a whopping 22.3 metres high, smashing his own British record in the process.

He said: “Ramsgate is a beautiful place to kitesurf and I would visit there anytime, kitesurfing works quite well off the beach. I went there for the strength of the winds, also access to the beach is very good from a kitesurfing perspective.”

Thanet Diving and Watersports, based in the arches at Ramsgate’s Royal Harbour, is now offering the chance to learn to kitesurf on the Ramsgate sands.

Sessions are available for beginners as well as coaching for those who have given it a go and want to hone their technique or learn some of the tricks (jumps) of the trade.

Have a go!

Equipment is also available to hire out for anyone who wants to visit the area and try out the sport as part of their stay.
