Armed police called to Newington and Ramsgate town after report of person seen with a weapon

Armed police and a dog unit have been called to Newington this afternoon (August 15). Armed units were also in King Street in the town.

Officers were alerted to a person with a weapon in Newington just before midday.

Several cars and the dog unit were in Princess Margaret Avenue at the Spar shop end. St Johns Crescent in Newington was blocked off (pictured below) with a witness reporting police shouting an alert of their presence at a nearby property.

Armed police units were also in King Street. Kent Police say the presence is all part of the same investigation.

Buses in the town were re-routed due to the incident. The 38 and 39 picked up passengers from the former Braces pub as the stop by Iceland was inaccessible.

A Kent Police spokesman said: “Kent Police received a call at 11.53am stating that a person known to them was seen with a weapon and making verbal threats.

“No injuries have been reported.

“Officers including firearms officers are currently in the Newington area carrying out enquiries.”

The spokesman confirmed armed officers in King Street, Ramsgate, are part of the same investigation.
