It’s tempting, as the nights draw in and the weather gets colder, to stay in and keep warm, and look at the outside from behind a pane of glass.
But doing so means that you are missing out, this is one of the best times of the year to get out and about and see what Ramsgate has to offer.
How about a walk to Pegwell Bay, for example? Large numbers of waders and wildfowl flock here in the winter, and it’s a perfect time to spot dunlin, oystercatchers, grey plover and curlews. Birdwatching is a long overdue, but recent addition to the Active Ramsgate offering, and there are a few tours that you can join to help you hunt out the stars of the show. Expert local birder Tony Swandale is one such person offering these tours.
Or how about hopping onto two wheels, and cycling along the Viking Coastal Trail? What better way to see this corner of England – there are 32 miles of on and off-road bike trails, suitable for anyone of any ability, fresh sea air and a bit of exercise, to then be rewarded by a bite to eat in the Arches. Perfect way to spend a winter’s afternoon. And you don’t even need to own a bike to do it.
And if you are a bit of a keen photographer, the sunsets are truly stunning at this time of year, head on out along the coast and take your camera, and you certainly won’t be disappointed, and if you are up early in the morning, the sunrises are almost as spectacular.
Of course, it does get dark earlier, but the twinkling lights of the boats in the Harbour as they put up their decorations for Christmas gets bigger and more extravagant each year. A sight truly to behold, and a warm mulled wine afterwards makes for a great evening with family or friends.
Finally, if you are more adventurous, this is the time of the year for kite surfers…a great sport to try if you are a thrill seeker and for the first time this year, lessons are being offered on Ramsgate sands, so why not end the year on a high, and try something for the first time (you know that was one of your New Year’s resolutions!)
So with all the above on offer, there’s no excuse to stay holed up – our wonderful town is there for exploring, and throws up some wonderful surprises in the winter!
