A Spirit of Kent flypast will celebrate an important anniversary at Manston

The Spitfire and Hurricane Memorial Museum is holding a one day celebratory event to mark the 72nd anniversary of the first operational flight of the Manston Spitfire.

The event, this Sunday (March 19) is free of charge, but all donations are very gratefully received and go towards running the museum and improving visitor services.

It will include a flypast by the Spirit of Kent, classic vehicles, helicopter flights by Helicharter and veterans signing books and object handling in the museum.

 

Parking

All car parking (apart from disabled) is on the northern grass. Disabled parking is in the museum car park.

Helping the museum to survive

The museum and the operation of a visitor attraction costs £93,000 a year to run

  • £26,228 in staffing and training costs to ensure the museum is run efficiently provides a ever-changing display to its visitors, is maintained, developed and can raise funds.
  • £14,364 in general repairs and maintenance to safeguard the collection and provide adequate visitor services.
  • £11,713 in collections costs to ensure the collection can be displayed and engaged with by the general public. A single display case costs £4,880
  • £11,001 in utilities bills to ensure the museum has adequate utilities to open.

The museum makes:

  • £27,000 from the shop.
  • £26,000 from the café.
  • £23,000 in donations.

These three sources of income mean that the museum makes £76,000 a year to support its work.
