A couple from Margate have taken the plunge and set up their own recruitment company.
Matt and Gemma Bevan have quit jobs with big business to run The Recruitment People based in Ramsgate.
The parents-of-five have two staff and are looking to take on more.
The Recruitment People is based at the Marlowe Innovation Centre in Ramsgate but staff are self-employed and able to work their own hours from home, making the job accessible for people needing to work around family commitments.
Former salesman Matt, 33, said: “We are trying to give people an opportunity where they don’t have to work 9-5 office hours. This is good for new mums, parents, who historically have had to take low-paid, part-time jobs. We want them to be able to be fantastic parents but also able to work in a flexible way earning a decent wage.
“Big corporate companies say they are there for their customers and staff but sometimes this is just a gimmick.
“I had worked in sales all my life and I felt that I wanted to do something meaningful which helped people.
“We are quite focused on finding local people work and helping them into roles big and small and giving our own staff the option to work from home as, with five kids, we know how difficult it can be for parents.
“Our staff get up to 50% for any placement, we handle the business and they do the interviewing.”
Gemma, also 33, already had a recruitment background and has transferred that knowledge to the new business.
She said: “For us it is about listening to our businesses and focusing on their needs and listening to our staff.”
The couple, who have been married for one year this week, say starting out on their own was scary but confidence in the business and staffing model they have adopted, as well as their own business experience, spurred them on.
Matt said: “It was scary but we wouldn’t have done it unless we were 100% sure of the model.”
