A furious Ramsgate mum has dumped her bags of rubbish at Thanet council offices

Sue Bell decides to 'cut out the middle man' and deliver her rubbish direct to Thanet council

A furious mum-of-four from Ramsgate has dumped her bags of rubbish at Thanet council premises, saying there has been a repeated failure to make weekly waste pick ups from her home.

Shop supervisor Sue Bell, from Margate Road, says she has had to contact the authority every week for the last nine weeks because waste has not been collected.

The seagull proof bags should be picked up on a Thursday but Sue says she has had to phone every week since May 5 to say the bags were not collected. In response they were being collected the Monday following each call, until a couple of weeks ago.

‘My bag was stinking’

The 51-year-old said: “Each time I reported it, it was then collected on the Monday. However, the other week it was left for two weeks despite reporting it. At this point my bag was stinking and full of flies and maggots as it was left out the front in the blistering heat, awaiting collection. In  no way do I blame the rubbish collection guys, this is all down to those in the office”

On June 9 Sue received an email to say her road had been omitted from the waste collection rota – although recycling was being picked up.

It said: “Please be advised that your road, along with others, is currently being collected by two vehicles.  One vehicle is collecting the recycling and one vehicle is collecting the general waste.  It appears that your road has been omitted from the general waste collection round, hence, you are not receiving a collection as scheduled.

“Margate Road, Ramsgate has now been brought to the attention of the refuse team to ensure that collections are made as scheduled each week.”

Sue said: “ I was assuming it would be rectified from then but no. I have contacted Cllr Suzanne Brimm and now even resorted to emailing our MP Craig Mackinlay.

‘Still, my rubbish sits outside’

“I had a reply from him saying he will be happy to assist me in this matter but still my rubbish sits outside.

“I shouldn’t have to do this week in week out. No one seems to be acting on it.

“I work full time and pay my council tax in full every month. I should not have to come home week after week on a Thursday stressed out because my rubbish has not been collected once again. I should not have to report it every single week.

“We live on a main road with no front garden so our seagull proof bags are tied to the railings on the main pathway.

“I am at the end of my tether.”

This morning Sue decided enough was enough after her rubbish was not picked up yesterday.

She took the four bags of waste and visited the council offices and Gateway premises, saying it was time “to cut out the middle man” and left them for staff to dispose of.

She said: “I told them that I appreciate that once I report it they do come along and collect on the Monday, except for one they left for two weeks in the heatwave.

“ I explained that all I want is for my collection to be taken on the scheduled day. I was also told I could not leave my rubbish there. to which I replied I was not taking it back with me and was  cutting out the middle man.

“ I have done everything possible to try and get people to listen and get it resolved. Nobody is listening or doing anything about it. I have been going round in circles. This is what I have had to resort to for someone to take me seriously.”

Ready for collection

Sue says her rubbish is put out each Wednesday night in the provided bag and she is mystified about why collections aren’t being made.

‘No other missed collections’

A Thanet council spokesman said: “We’re doing all we can to resolve this issue which we understand is contained to a single property in the road. We can confirm there have been no other missed collections recently in the rest of the street. We are keen to work with the residents concerned to ensure that their waste is being correctly presented for collection.

“Our recycling and waste team has attempted to contact Mrs Bell directly and will continue to do so to ensure that there are no future instances of missed bins at her property.

“Details of how waste needs to be stored outside on the day of collection is provided on our website. A postcode lookup is also available for any resident who wishes to check when waste and recycling collections are due in their area.”

  1. Our whole road in Pegwell has been missed for the past 2 Fridays. I have rung and emailed. I’ve been rung back by TDC to be told we are not even on the website for collection! We were assured last week that the road would be put on for collection. 5 days we had to wait and, like Sue, had flies and maggots! I even saw the bin men this morning and asked them politely, to remember our road, but they drove straight past it! 4 hours, a phone call and an email later, I’m told the message will go to the back office and marked URGENT, as it’s the whole road. Is that worse than missing one person’s rubbish then? I said I wasn’t prepared to leave the food bin out again, so was advised to put the food bag into the black bin. Not likely! It’s another 2 weeks before that bin is collected (or forgotten) again!

  2. I haven’t had a recycling collection since I moved in in January, when I spoke to my neighbours they said they can’t remember the last time it was collected…. I’ve reported it every time it’s been missed and it still hasn’t been collected.

  3. our rubbish had not been collected at all for 7 weeks. despite numerous phone calls and emails to the waste and recycling team. it was FINALLY collected on Wed!!!

  4. It’s certainly not an isolated incident I have had the same happen in margate. They say it will be collected with in 5 days what they should say is wait until next week’s collection. When they do finally arrive they leave most of it strewn across the path and road the council have the cheek to charge us £80 fine for dropping a cigarette back in the day the dustman were helpful polite n happy to help now they don’t give a #### until Xmas n they have a cheek to knock on the door n wish you seasons greetings n hold there hand out. Now they won’t take this or that it’s to big to small wrong shape and here is the kicker sort the rubbish for recycle when it all gets tipped into the same lorry n mixed with everything else do they really think we are that stupid I asked the collection department why this happens they said it gets sorted into compartments in the lorry omd rant over
