Broadstairs Folk Week

August 11- August 18

The ticketed events of the 52nd annual Folk Week start tonight. There are over 500 separate events crammed into one week.

The 600 seater Concert Marquee in Pierremont park is the festival hub where the  headline acts appear.

Arty Folk

New Kent Art Gallery, Broadstairs

A two week exhibition at the New Kent Art Gallery celebrating Broadstairs Folk Week has opened.

Arty Folk features  art, photography, ceramics and sculpture and will run until August 20.

Karen and Ian Record exhibition

Pie Factory Margate ,10th – 16th August

Karen creates abstract paintings in oil and watercolour, Ian makes recycled steel sculptures,

This sale and exhibition is the culmination of a years work, all produced  on their old ship the Crazy Diamond.

Target Youth Hub launch open day

Children’s Centre, Park Lane, Birchington, 6pm to 9pm

Hot dogs for the youngsters, tea and coffee for mums and dads, might even be a biscuit. Open to all from year 4 upwards from 6pm till 9pm. Come along and hear what will be on offer at the club.

Broadstairs Folk Week parade

Broadstairs Folk Week

There will be lots of free events across the town, music in pubs and headline act at the marquee. The  Big Parade, a family-friendly procession of music, morris and magic, starts from Pierremont Hall at 5.30pm.

Thanet Open Studios

Meet artists, have a nose around studios and maybe buy a bit of work during the Thanet Open Studios event.

More than 30 artists at 20 studios will be opening to the public in Ramsgate, Broadstairs, Margate and Westgate every weekend this month from this Saturday (August 12)

World’s biggest bouncy castle at Dreamland

Photo Bestival

The mammoth inflatable will have a two-week stay at the park from Saturday August 12 to Saturday, August 26.

Created by the teams at House of Bestival and Something Creatives, the castle is filled with 1143 cubic metres of air and measures an epic 21 metres square. It stands at nearly 13 metres tall at its highest point.

Adults and kids can enjoy the bouncy castle, which comfortably accommodates 100 people at one time. The inflatable’s side turrets are equal in height to the walls of Cardiff Castle – making it taller than the Great Wall of China and roughly three times the size of the Berlin Wall.

Open to visitors from 11.30am on every day of its stay, a 10-minute bounce will cost £3.50 or £3 for Dreamland Members. Book in advance to secure a slot.

Margate Pride parade

The parade starts at 2pm, Saturday, August 12 at The Lido.

There will be a family friendly afternoon rally with speeches from National LGBT figures at the recently refurbished Dreamland.

All this is served with live music and numerous parties at The Britannia, The Piazza, Sundowners and many more LGBT friendly spaces – follow the rainbows –  or alternatively, see the programme for a full list of participating venues.

There will be screenings, performances, exhibitions, the march, festivities and parties throughout Saturday and Sunday, August 12-13.

Margate Pride Cockles and Muscles

Filling the Ballroom and the Roller Disco with fabulous fun on August 12, expect glitter, glam outfits and drag queens – with DJs and live acts keeping the crowds dancing all night long.

Cockles and Muscles will take place from 9pm – 2am. Tickets are £15 in advance and are available via dreamland.co.uk.

Damo Suzuki and Jon Law and Oli Genn-Bash
Ramsgate Music Hall from 7.30pm

Former singer of legendary German krautrock band CAN Damo Suzuki will perform with a specially formed band of ‘sound carriers’ as he likes to refer to them, Cosmic Thoughts and Brassica Ensemble. There will be visuals and DJ’s spinning a magical carpet of krautrock inspired sound.

History Walk From Margate Harbour To Drapers Windmill

Local historian Robin Colyer is leading a tour of historic parts of Margate, starting at the Droit House, Margate Harbour.

The walk will start at 2pm visiting the High Street, Cecil Square, Hawley Square and Charlotte Place on the way. Arriving at the mill by 3.20pm

The mill will be open for a free guided tour and there will be an opportunity to hear Robin give a short talk about the major repair work which is currently in progress.

There is no charge and no need to book.

Jyll Bradley: Dutch/Light (For Agneta Block)

Turner Contemporary

Jyll Bradley’s Dutch/Light (for Agneta Block), will be in situ on the Gallery terrace from Saturday 12 August.

The structure will be activated by the sun – walk and sit underneath it while bathed in geometric colour.  Dutch/Light (for Agneta Block) celebrates the history of horticultural exchange between the UK and the Netherlands. The installation, co-commissioned by Chatham Historic Dockyard and Turner Contemporary in partnership with Culture Kent, marks the 350th anniversary of the Dutch Raid on the River Medway in 1667.

St Laurence Fair

St Laurence church, Ramsgate, 2pm-5pm

Annual fair with many stalls, teas in the Vicarage Gardens, music, entertainment and tours of the Church, Church Tower and churchyard during the afternoon.

World Elephant Day

Powell Cotton Museum, Quex

Handle a real elephant tooth, make an elephant-themed craft and listen to a story.

Sessions run 11am-noon, noon-1pm & 2-3pm.

Diversity Slam with Joelle Taylor

Olby’s Soul Cafe, Margate from 4pm

Neanderthal Bard has teamed up with Olby’s Soul Cafe Margate to bring you The Diversity Slam for Margate Pride. Joelle Taylor is hosting and headlining this event supported by local feature poets Sarah Tait and Charles Tolfree.

Dreamland Battle of the Bands  on the Scenic Stage.

Bands will battle it out every Sunday afternoon to be in with a chance of being crowned the inaugural BOTB winners, securing the grand prize of session time in a recording studio.
