Meet local Children’s author, Lily Cleo Hewitt for a lovely storytime and activity with her picture book ‘The Storm Foal’ at Staple.
One stormy summer’s day the lighthouse of a small town flickers out and a lost kelpie, Finn, wanders ashore in the dark. Rose befriends him and decides to bring him home – despite warnings not to! But as the kelpie spends more time on land, both he and the weather become more and more out of control.
Despite their fun and friendship… is the kelpie meant to be somewhere else? A heartwarming and magical tale about the lifelong impact of true friendship.
Lily and her co-author, Megsie Bray, wrote ‘The Storm Foal’ together during Covid as a long-distance way of sharing joy. They took it in turns to write a sentence at a time and then found their illustrator Maddie Vian by chance, who happened to live in the same town! They have both always adored folklore and spoken stories and have had a whole load of adventures together around the globe since meeting aged seven. The Storm Foal is also available to order in Mandarin and Spanish.
During the session, the responsible adult(s) are very welcome to enjoy their favourite coffee and pastry downstairs at STAPLE or come and hang out upstairs in the bookshop!!

Volunteers at Margate’s RNLI lifeboat station are once again hosting the popular Community Blue Light Day on Sunday 1 September where the public can meet the emergency services and learn a little about what happens when you dial 999.
Between 10.30am and 3.30pm the public can come along to the RNLI lifeboat station at Margate and meet representatives from among others: Margate RNLI Lifeboat, RNLI Lifeguards, HM Coastguard, Kent Fire & Rescue Service, Kent Police, South East Coast Ambulance Service and St John Ambulance.
It promises to be a fun day out suitable for all the family, children in particular will love the experience where they can get close up to the lifeboats and rescue vehicles and meet the emergency responders – don’t forget your cameras! The day will include live demonstrations including sea safety advice and the opportunity to learn new life skills including junior CPR instruction. Operational circumstances permitting, the lifeboat will launch for an afloat demonstration at 1pm and Kent Fire & Rescue is hoping to have its height vehicle and urban rescue team in attendance.
Visitors can meet RNLI fundraisers with the opportunity to buy a gift at the Lifeboat Shop where you can contribute to saving lives at sea. You can even learn about volunteering for the lifeboat service – including in roles where you don’t have to get your feet wet! Hot and cold drinks will also be available, all proceeds in aid of the RNLI.

Sense of Stigma
The Beaney Canterbury, now until September 29
Mellissa Monsoon from Ramsgate is an internationally recognised bio-artist whose work brings the invisible world of human anatomy to life. Her multidisciplinary practice ranges from illustration, printmaking, photography, film, sculpture, electronics and ceramics.
Sense of Stigma is an exhibition of printmaking, interactive art, ceramics and sculpture sharing Monsoon’s lived experience and journey as a ‘fat woman’ in healthcare and society. Monsoon invites the public and healthcare professionals to engage with the exhibition respectfully, learning about how to speak about body types and taking part in workshops to make sense of the stigma through visual art; changing the way people see and speak about larger bodies.
This exhibition is supported by the Arts Council and IIHUK Charity.
How odd that there’s a Classic Cars show at Quex House, as there was a classic car show as part of the Kent Country Show last weekend – including those MGs pictured (I like classic car shows alot, but I’m not going to pay to see much the same thing just a week later!).
I think you’ll find it’s free to see the cars Peter, there is a charge to enter the museum though.
Oops, I never read it properly! Thank you. I may pop along then.
More things to do in Thanet this weekend.
Circumnavigate Thanet by Seaweed. Love to paddleboard? Leave the board at home, just bring your paddle to Minnis Bay, 11 am, high tide Sunday, grab a floating dried out mat of rotten seaweed, and paddle round our glorious coastline to Pegwell Bay. First to squelch ashore through the mud and reach land receives a Seek Help, sorry, Sea Kelp garland from Miss/Mr/Ms Ramsgate, and their seaweed board will be preserved alongside the Viking Ship in memory of their epic journey for future generations to marvel at.
Sunday lunchtime. Margate pier. Mass Smoke-In (or rather Out) in support of Nigel Farridge’s protest at Stasi Starmer’s proposed outdoor smoking ban. Clacton is only about 30 miles across the Thames Estuary as the gull flies, and our Nige will be able to see the cloud of Thanet fag smoke of support from his constituency office. He won’t be there of course, but serving his constituents by grifting in the USA, Hong Kong or Russia as usual. But it’s the thought that counts. So bring plenty of ciggies, puff away and raise a glass of ale to our hero over the water. (Please refrain from tossing fag ends off the pier, in case they set fire to any passing sea weed raft paddlers).
All weekend. Loop the Loop Rawdogging. Want to be part of the latest TikTok Rawdog trend, but can’t afford a long haul flight to Australia? Two trips around Thanet on the Loop should roughly equate to the 22 hour flight “down under” at a fraction of the cost. Start at the QEQM (shortly to be renamed the QUILTBAG) Hospital bus stop, get on the first anti-clockwise loop and film yourself staring silently ahead as your bus trundles slowly around Thanet and stops every 50 yards at endless traffic lights, or to pick up fit young men reeking of weed and put them down again two stops later. Chill as it waits half an hour at Westwood bus station for a change of driver, and at Ramsgate harbour and Cecil Square to give the bus a rest. Anti-clockwise tour of the isle completed, alight at the QUILTBAG, catch the next loop clockwise and do the same journey in reverse. Remember you’re not allowed to move from your seat, read, take refreshment, look at your phone (apart from the filming) or have a toilet break, so best bring a change of Tena Pants. The Rawdogger with the most TikTok views gets a fast track 12 hour wait triage at A&E to check their mental state and a detoxing from 22 hours exposure to cannabis resin fumes.
Mill Row Walk, Birchington, dusk, any fine night. Walk the ancient footpath to the lip of the hill above Brooksend, and marvel at the huge sky, the stunning view over the fields towards St Nicholas, Reculver and the sea, as the sun sets in the west. And reflect that before long this will be a vast building site, with bulldozers scraping up the earth, and where you’re standing will soon be a huge estate of miserable modern houses. And try not to weep.
Keep taking the tablets.
Thanks Kathy. So much going on here in Thanet. A very special part of Europe 👌
What does the little yellow picture at the end of Ewan Uzarmi’s comment represent? It’s so small and faint that it’s not very clear. Also, in what way does he think Thanet is “a very special part of Europe”?
“Special needs” perhaps.
“Ewan Uzarmi”, could you please give your reason/s for calling Thanet “a very special part of Europe”? Thank you.
As you’re always saying how great the place is (well the Ramsgate bit anyway), surely you could tell us yourself? Go on, tell us why YOU think it’s so special instead of just defending the place whenever there’s major crime.
Manston market .. waist of time .. don’t bother
“Waist”? No food there then?
