Margate was packed on Sunday (August 4) for the annual carnival.
This year was the first for many years that Dane Valley’s Maurice Morris was not at the head of the procession. Maurice passed away in March aged 91. He had been a regular sight at the carnival, usually leading the way on his bike.
This year around 40 entrants took part. The parade ran from Palm Bay to Westbrook Bay although not all participants dd the full route.
Belly dancers, dragons, carnival courts, pubs, Dreamland Heritage Trust, Sea Cadets, care homes, children’s charities, dance schools, and majorettes were among the entrants.
Notting Hill winners, Mahogany Arts, local Samba band, Samba Ya Wantsum and band Jankanoo also took part.
Carnivals at Margate and Ramsgate were this year organised by Great British Carnival.
It seems it’s all about Margate, much better & longer than Ramsgate’s carnival. Sad moment not seeing Mr Maurice Morris not in the parade, God bless him. Margates carnival was like a Mardi Gras compared to Ramsgate’s parade sadly.
Well done to the organisers, the carnival entrants, bucket shakers and everyone involved. It was fantastic.
Can remember when there use to be over 100 floats in Margate and Ramsgate carnivals. Just show’s how broken this country has become community’s destroyed by a brake down in community and British way of life
My long term friends & I were saying the same thing. Long gone are those days unfortunately.
When was that then ? I have lived here all my life and have never seen a 100 floats .most 40-50 think you are exaggerating
In the 70/80s carnival ran from Westgate seafront to plam bay, I was in most myself so not exaggerating do some history.
Sorry found it very dispointing-It was over in a flash.
i found some of it rather disturbing . certain groups are using it for thier own personal promotion , and not in the spirit of which it was originaly intended
