Crowds turned out in the sunshine to watch this year’s Ramsgate Carnival parade from Government Acre through to the town.

The carnival fair on Government Acre ran all weekend with the parade setting off this afternoon (July 28).

Among the parade was a winter themed float, mini-tank, giant bears, carnival courts, the Salvation Army and Hooden Horses causing mischief. There were also drummers, musicians and a host of other characters.

This year organisers created a shorter route in addition to parade around the town so walkers and dancers could turn off at the bottom of Harbour Street and rejoin the carnival at the junction of Queen Street.

Yesterday, entertainment on Government Acre included the Kent Giants, Sam and Flora, Esmerelda the dragon and other discordant comicals alongside Robert Mayne’s traditional funfair and a variety of stalls.

  1. it dont look like the carnivals as i remember them , its a very poor effort , and more like a gay pride event ?

    • You might need to re-up your memberberry subscription then buddy.

Well done for showing your ever present, thinly veiled bigotry, too.

  2. Yes shame all residents attending and agree not much effort of carnival float a few old vans can’t the council give more funding for the annual carnival shame

  3. Seems like a lot of people are wanting to be entertained but not get involved. Too busy scrolling through their lives!

  4. Well done to everyone involved in putting on Ramsgate carnival this year. Loved the Hooden Horse parade around Government Acre on Saturday afternoon. And it was great to see the crowds out lining the route through town for the main parade on Sunday. Thank you all for a great weekend.

  5. It appears that your experience this year depended on where you stood.

The hundreds of people standing in the heat from Madeira Walk onwards had no idea that half the entries were turning off at Harbour Street. The multiple marshals up there made no attempt to explain to those who had been waiting from 3.30pm onwards that this was the case. From the position I always stand, by the bandstand, there was about half of what we usually see, with huge gaps in between.

I understand the reasons for some not being able to go up Madeira Walk but if only some are going up there, none should go up at all and a new accessible route for the entire Carnival should be devised.

    • Hopefully the organisers will take this on board next year as it sounds like there was a lot of disappointment on the East Cliff. The volunteers and those who took part all put do much time and effort into this over many months but hopefully more people will be motivated to get involved and contribute to fundraising next year if they are in a position to.
