PEJ ABC boxers scoop seven golds and three silvers at Manchester Box Cup

Successful bouts for PEJ ABC boxers

PEJ ABC Margate scooped seven golds and three silvers at this year’s Manchester Box Cup tournament.

The club, based in Hatfeild Road, entered its biggest contingent to date with a team of 10 boxers.

The PEJ boxers had 15 bouts with 12 wins against tough opposition from clubs from across England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland and overseas.

Ten year old prospect Tyler Knight stepped up a year and won gold by unanimous points decision over a well-schooled Irish opponent.

Finley Knight,13, also won gold by unanimous points decision over a tough Irish opponent and Charlie Knight 14 won gold by points decision over a more experienced opponent.

Ralph Mansfield, 11, won gold with a unanimous points win in his semi-final followed by a unanimous points win in the final.

Riley Mansfield, 15, won gold with a unanimous points win over his Manchester opponent in his semi-final followed by a unanimous points win over a tricky Irish opponent in the final.

Female boxer Aisha Cook, 15, won gold by first round stoppage following a unanimous points decision win in her semi-final  and 11 year old prospect Alfie Glithero stepped up two weight groups after his opponent withdrew and went on to win gold by third round stoppage following a win in his semi-final by unanimous points decision.

Rio Licata, 12, took silver with a very close split points decision to a strong Irish opponent, although all at the club thought he had done enough.

Kian Mitchell, 11, won silver after putting in a fantastic semi-final performance, upsetting the odds by winning on points against a more experienced opponent. In his final he was very unlucky not to get the decision in a great bout but a decent performance nonetheless.

Tommy Glithero, 15, settled for silver after his original opponent withdrew and he stepped up in age and class, dropping a points decision to highly rated  international opponent who had won silver twice for his country in the Tri Nations.

Tommy pushed his opponent all the way and never once looked out of place.

The previous week Rio Licata, Ralph Mansfield and Alfie Glithero all won gold at the Bristol Box Cup.

Coach Mario Michael said: “On behalf of all the coaching team and everyone involved at PEJ ABC we would like to congratulate all the boxers who have worked extremely hard in preparation all season.

They all done themselves and the club proud once again we would like to thank Malwai Nijar of Pej Court Properties for his continued support.”

PEJ ABC is based at 17 Hatfeild Road, Margate.

Sessions are on Monday, Wednesday and Friday – juniors 6pm-7pm, youths and seniors 7pm-9pm.
