Review: New brunch menu launches at Kebbells in Broadstairs

Smoked bacon chop, poached eggs, roasted tomato, toasted focaccia and spicy ketchup

A new brunch menu has landed at Kebbells in Broadstairs combining Mediterranean influence with locally sourced food.

The laid-back bar and restaurant in Victoria Parade opened in May 2021 and is proving a popular spot.

On Saturday before noon it was comfortably full with families and couples enjoying the sharing plate theme and new menu items.

The menu offers grilled kippers, home smoked chalk stream trout and barbecued sardines for the fish lovers – as well as Maldon or Jersey oysters – but there are also plenty of options if fish isn’t your thing.

My partner and I tried out the chargrilled smoked bacon chop and smoky Morcilla sausage (pictured), both served with poached eggs, roasted tomatoes, Focaccia and spicy ketchup (costing £14 and £12 respectively) plus a side of Rose Farm potato hash browns with sour cream and chives (£7) and coffee.

The kitchen is headed by chef Craig Mather who has previously taught at Broadstairs College and worked at the Little Ships and Empire Room in Ramsgate.

Everything on the plate looked almost too good to eat and packed great flavour – especially the Thanet Earth tomato which was a surprise to me as I’d usually leave that on the plate. The bread was amazing and we watched several ‘loaves’ coming out of the ovens from our vantage point at the restaurant’s long bar. And I need to mention the homemade sauces, you probably won’t have tasted ketchup quite like this before.

A real plus at Kebbells is the ability to cater for food intolerances by adapting any item on the menu rather than just offering a small selection. Owners Sarah and Richard Kebbell say one of the prompts to running the restaurant was the couple’s difficulties finding somewhere nice to eat that also catered for Sarah’s coeliac – which means she is gluten intolerant.

This has been built into Kebbells with sourcing of ingredients and Sarah’s knowledge meaning any intolerance can be catered for.

The new brunch menu also includes cocktails after 10am, such as Bloody Mary and Peach Bellini, and buttermilk and blueberry pancakes (gluten free) which looked amazing and are on my ‘to eat next’ list.

Brunch can be ordered between 9am and 11am on Saturday and Sunday. The restaurant is dog friendly.

The main menu alternates with whatever is in season and features everything from mussels and oysters to pork chop, chicken, roasted pumpkin, cauliflower steak, homemade ice creams and  bread made on the premises.
